Next week I'm going to be visiting friends in the Czech Republic and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about what to see, preferably outside Prague (I'll have a car).

So far my list is: The 'Bone Church' (Sedlec Ossuary) , Museum of Communism (Prague), Communist Archtecture (inc. paneláky buildings in Prosek), Theresienstadt concentration camp.

I'm more interested in places with a social history -- particularly communist -- than in pretty castles etc. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Go to Plzen, have a beer.

Also, Austria is one hour (for example the Mauthausen concentration camp), and Germany (glass factories) two hours away by car.

If you like a beer, stop at Svijany - direction Liberec - a small brewery, IMO much better than Plzen. If you'd like to try various beers from small breweries try "Pivovarský klub" in Prague (use the google) - you can find something you like and then make a trip to the brewery. Many small breweries offer a tour and degustation...

As for deserted country that is stigmatised by the era of communism, you can try a trip along the borders - either in the south - Novohradské hory, Šumava (Bohmerwald) or in the west - drive from Plzen to Karlovy Vary /both places worth visiting/ not on the main road but through the villages.. Sometimes you can find there almost postapocalypic looking places - almost like from a movie by Tarkovsky..

If you'd like to ask anything just drop me a PM.
(It's a pity I'll be on my holiday next week, it would be nice to meet another RFFer over a beer or two.. :) )

Many thanks for this -- 'postapocalypic' sounds interesting! I expect I'll be visiting my friends again so hopefully we can meet up next time.

Last time in Chech Republic I drove to see Česke Švycarsko, wonderful area in Western part of country. Very relaxing after Praha, although I like it. In Praha, take a look at pivnice "U Černého Vola" - years back, it were nice place, if you like to avoid typical tourist places.
