visiting Baltimore, MD

I will be in Baltimore, MD, for the Biophysical Society meeting early next month (there. I've said it. I'm a geek 🙄 ). Since work is paying for me to fly there, I'm arriving a day or two early so I can, er, acclimatise 😀 . In practice I fly in the 1st of March, conference starts in earnest on the 4th.

Several questions arise... Are any of you in Baltimore and do you fancy spending a few hours wandering around and shooting some film, either Friday or Saturday that week? Failing that, any suggestions on where I should go? I've never been to Baltimore, but I gather the Inner Harbour is worth seeing. What else? Dinner recommendations also taken 😛 . And lastly: are there any RFFers going to the meeting, per chance? That might be even more fun... You don't have to confess in public, do send a PM if you prefer 😎 .

Hi! I can recommend a restaurant called the Mount Vernon Stable. When I go to Balitimore I always make time to go by. Its basically Pub Grub, known for its ribs, but I go for a sandwich called the "The Shellacious" which has shrimp, lumpcrab, and provolone. Also if you like artery clogging fried appetizers check out the "Chicago Onion loaf". I especially liked not having to fight typical touristy crowds. Here is the web site:

Are you having the meeting and staying downtown at or near the Inner Harbor? You will find downtown Baltimore to have better food with local flavor just barely outside (within walking distance or via water taxi) the Inner Harbor area. Consider Federal Hill, Little Italy, Fells Point, Locust Point (near Fort McHenry) and Canton. All of these have excellent food with local flavor vs. the Inner Harbor proper with it's many national upscale restaurants chains such as Legal Seafood, Morton's, Rusty Scupper, etc. found in most big cities. All quite good but not as unique. These other locations also provide better picture taking opportunities although the National Aquarium is a great place for shooting especially their permanent rain forrest exhibit.

I like the Fells Point area. You can get there from the Inner harbor via water taxi. (I don't get there often as the last time I was in Baltimore I was at the B&O museum. A must for railfans).

March is not the best month to visit 'Charm City' but I think you will find it an interesting city to photograph.

Baltimore is a funky place. Think blue collar, then think film maker John Waters. But it's also full of urban blight (think HBO's "The Wire"). Be very careful about staying inside the boundaries of the tourist friendly areas mentioned by others, Canton, Fells Point, Inner Harbor, Federal Hill, Little Italy. Baltimore has more than its share of "mean streets." Larger cities such as New York City in the US are actually far safer.

Dress for the possibility of cold, blustery weather. Early March weather can range from almost Spring like to full blown Winter with snowfall.

I don't know much Baltimore that has not been mentioned since I'm in DC. I will agree with others on the weather though. We have been in a miserable cold snap here so dress warm. Take a day if you have it and visit DC as well.

Thank you, all, for your comments - they were very helpful. I'm looking forward to my trip! The meeting is in the conference centre and I'm staying walking distance from it. It seems I can pretty much walk in any direction and provided I don't go too far, find good things to look at and good things to eat!

Grizzz: yes, DC has been on my list for a long time. It won't happen this trip as I haven't the time, but certainly in the future. The museums and monuments are mighty appealing.
