Vivian Maier - THE BOOK!!!

She didn't strike me as a rah-rah Go-America type person...in fact, she'd probably be vilified by the Tea Party types. Darn uppity free-thinking women!

I think a lot of her sensibilities were formed by her time in Europe. That said, I'd absolutely buy that book. Her work and life story is fascinating.

I saw an exhibition of some of her work in Chicago in Feb.
Good stuff.
Many of her photos were taken in New York, as well as abroad on vacation.

They're going to milk that poor woman's legacy just like any other 'product' until its forgotten.

Although there is nothing wrong with that, at the same time I can't help but feel if its at all appropriate to turn a dead person's work and life into a product and sell it under silly titles such as American Street Photographer.

All her work should have been donated to the city of Chicago and their local museum and any money made from her should have been added to a trust fund or a scholarship or something... This sort of blatant grave robbery is shameful - in my humble opinion.

GREAT !!
I recenrly Discovered her work

I think we've been over this already.

The sub-title is stupid. But I will still be buying it.

this was a lot more work than most appreciate

I tend to think of her as a Chicago documentarian in the broadest sense of the phrase. It's definitely not LA, Boston nor San Francisco.

My hat's off to John Maloof for recognizing what he saw, going after the balance that he could accumulate and now for doing all the grunt work, developing, reviewing, compiling, collating, and producing and financing this. I don't know if I would have had the conviction he did and I'm in the middle of a book myself. It's not a cake walk, it's a genuine risk.

No-one is getting rich off this endeavor, but the hard work needs to be done: her oeuvre deserves better than decay in a cardboard box. The Chicago exhibition was well presented, although silver halide prints would be even better. It's very cool to see top-grade street composed into the square.

It must be interesting for you as a Chicago resident to see these photographs. Did you recognize streetscapes and buildings?

Thank you for the info about the book. Vivian Maier is one of the most delightful surprises of these last years. She deserves all our recognition.

Most images were up close and personal, rather than cityscapes, but some showed timeless Chicago elements (e.g. the El).

The subtitle is really stupid and makes the whole thing sound like a made-for-tv special for the history channel. Also, I'm curious to know whether or not they got the sequencing and layout right. Did Maloof do the edit or did they get a proper experienced curator? Anyways, let's hope it looks good.
