Vivitar 35 ES

Could someone who is currently using a Vivitar ES advise me on the type of a modern PX625 equivalent; and what -if any- compensation in ASA setting is necessary? Wein cells and current converters are too expensive.
Thanks in advance

Has anyone changed the seals on the Vivitar? That big blob of material on the door is a sight to behold and I've been hesitant to change them on mine. :)

Hey greyhoundman! Hope everything is well with you. The Canonet you CLA'd for me awhile back is a pleasure to use now.

John, contact Jon Goodman here on RFF. He's the master when it comes to light seals. He also has this same Vivitar, I know, I've seen it :)

Yup...I've been using his seals for a handful of cameras (best deal on ebay!). I didn't know he did one for the 35ES. I'll have to look that up. Thank you!!

Yes, I've used his seal material on my Ricoh 500G and FSU cameras, and will use some more on the Vivitar.

Here is another vote for Jon Goodman's seal kits. I bought a kit from Jon. I resealed my Vivitar 35ES with it. Then I traded my "parts" 35ES to Jon for an Industar 61 with M42 threads for my Spotmatic. Jon sent me an email with the completed instructions for resealing the 35ES, complete with pictures. So now my former "parts" camera is famous, since it is the camera in the pictures.

I expect that he will soon post the procedure and pictures at the Kyphoto web site with his other instructions provided there.

Regards, Steve

Without a doubt Jon's seals are a must. I've probably changed the seals on 6 cameras using his kit and there's enough for more! You don't happen to have the instructions on the Viv 35es you can send me? I looked at kyphoto and it's not posted.

Today, the Revue 400 SE I got from the bay arrived.
Camera looks good, shutter speeds sound reasonable and the light meter reacts.
Nice little camera, looking forward to the results.

What I like about it compared to e.g. the Olys is that it takes standard 675 hearing aid batteries - no fiddling with o-rings, adapters or whatsoever.

Best regards,
Uwe

Uwe - I hope it works well. The 1.4v 675 battery seems to give pretty accurate meter readings as far as I can tell on colour neg film. They only last a couple of months though.

I hope so, too! After the neg test film I will try out some slide film. We shall see...

Well, a couple of months would be not too bad as the 1.4v 675 are quite cheap.
But then again, if you run out of battery power in the middle of nowhere w/o a spare battery, the Olys definitely have the advantage!

I was also looking at RD 35's, but those go for twice as much as the Revue/ Vivitar...

Best regards,
Uwe

I have an 8 pack of these batteries in my bag. $6.
That goes a long way towards eliminating battery life concerns.

I think the Vivitar has default setting and will fire the shutter without batteries. Not sure wht the setting is.

Steve - you are absolutely right. A few extra batteries do not take much room and are quite inexpensive.

The Viviater has some limitations compared to the RD but the lens certainly is not one of them. The RD is probably 3 or 4 times more expensive in the UK.

We should really stop talking about the marvellous Vivitar - prices will start to rocket!

I've just checked my 35 ES against my OM2n meter (which I know is accurate). With a silver SR44 (which is what it came with) the 35 ES meter gives one stop over, so if I set the film speed to a stop faster the exposure looks spot on.

I'm going to order some 675s though - I'd prefer to have the voltage as close to what it was designed for as possible.
