They are both f2.8 max app. They are the same style just different focal lengths. I haven't shot much with either lens but want to keep one and send the other with my kid to school. He's taking a beginning dark room photog class this semester.
For a photo class let the kid take the 55mm, it is a standard angle lens and can be used for more applications than the 90mm lens. If I only had one then I'd prefer the 90 because of it's greater working distance. If i recall correctly the 55 focused to 1:1 and the 90 focuses to 1:2
They both focus to 1:1. The 55 is in better shape appearance wise but they are the same as far as optics , good clean glass. I'm going to send the 55mm on your recommendation. There is no list of needed supplies listed yet for the class and classes start tomorrow.
Ain't it great!!?? I just did the same, and the last four days I was a day ahead. 😛
I don't know about the Olympus, but many 50mm macro lenses required an extension tube to achieve 1:1. If so, they should be easy to find. You could also use extension tubes with regular lenses (including longer than 50mm) for macro, but they wouldn't be flat field when that is important. Extension tubes may be light meter coupled, or may require stop down metering.
I used extension tubes for quite a while until I got my 50mm Fujinon macro. Mostly used it for crime scene photos. But never used either that often.
I think he has the Komine built 55mm and 90mm macros.
I have the Panogor branded version of the 55mm in P/K mount, it's a superb lens.
I agree with zuiko85. A 55 will be better for a photo class.
The 90mm is a komine. The 55mm is off to university in Nashville. So will have to check it later, though it looks the same as the 90mm so probably the same manufacture.
