I'm considering purchase of either 75mm or 90mm Voigtlander lens for my M8. These are focal lengths I probably won't use a great deal, but I'd like to have one or the other in my bag, just in case.

Anyone have any experience with either?

I thought you could use the 77mm filter adapter for the 12mm on the 15mm lens. Still the cost of a 77mm IR filter might be a bit steep.

Kim is correct. You need to put some black electrical tape around the built in lens shade of the 15mm lens. This allows the 12mm lens clamp on filter holder to properly fit. I did this and it works. Down side is that the push on lens cap does not fit, unless you remove some of the felt lining in the cap. I intend on using the 15mm CV on my M8 (when I get it). Irwin Puts does a great job of reviewing the CV lenses on his site. He has nice things to say about both the 75mm and 90mm CV lenses.

Thinking seriously of jumping on the double rebates for a 5D and put the rest of the money into a gym membership so I can carry it :D

Don't forget you'll also need to budget for the ear plugs and shock absorbers :D

samthase,

If you're considering a new CV 90mm then you should also consider a used 90mm Tele-Elmarit if you can find a clean one of the thin variety. Check the Leica list to make sure its serial number is in the newer range which means you could also get it 6-bit coded if you chose to do so down the road.

I've never handled or used the CV 90mm but I do have the Leica T-E and have never been disappointed. Plus, as a tangible benefit you also get a one-stop speed advantage with the T-E. It is also a small lens which makes it handy to carry when traveling.

The 75mm option is a different story since the CV alternative is so very much more affordable that either Leica option. (Full disclosure: I sold my 75mm Summiux and bought the 75 Summicron as soon as the latter was announced. I've never handled nor used the CV 75mm lens but those that have love the lens.)

Hi all:
A direct quote from Erwin Puts review of the CV 90mm lens on his great web site:

"Given the price of the Apo-Lanthar 90, this lens is a better choice than most second hand 90;s from Leica on the market and is very close to the performance of the current 2.8/90, which is some act: the apo-lanthar is unbeatable in price/performance relation. Its performance can be improved upon and mechanically it may be of limited durability. As it stands it is optically a first class design."

you may want to consider the CV as opposed to a used Leica 90.
Regards
Dave
