Users of this combo - any experience on how the Nokton 40 field of view is corresponding with the 35mm framelines of the Zeiss Ikon? I think I'm going to buy this lens, learn which framelines work better for me with it (35 or 50), and eventually have it modified to bring up the 35er frame. Anybody been through this process? In particular, any hints as to WHO could do the modification in Europe? I don't think I can risk myself using any tool on a lens... .
Cheers Gerold

I just bought such a lens for my ZI, but I don't have it yet. I'm thinking the 35mm frame lines would be more usable, but then again, I just might be able to learn to imagine the proper framelines in my head... :D

Cheers,
Jeremy

Hi Gerold and Jeremy,

I drew framelines for the focal lengths you guys may want to compare. Hope it helps.

If what the Shutterfly review said indicates that the actual focal length of the ZM35 is slightly larger than 35mm and its frameline is drawn accordingly so, there's a possibility the 35mm frameline of ZI should be placed somewhere in between the 35 & 40mm framelines in the above figure.. If this is the case, ZI's 35mm line would be a better approximation for the 40mm lens than any other camera maybe?

alright, it seems we are all speculating a little bit. I'm going to buy the lens and to a test series to evaluate the real-life situation. I reckon the 50mm frames will win over the 35er. I use the 28er for the 25mm, and find it easy to add a margin to the 28er frame. And with the habit of framing rather generously, I normally get the result I wanted. Could be the same with framing a 40mm with the 50er frame, just that the margin in larger.

Han, nice rectangles, thanks! Presumably these are drawn from theoretical values, not from the actual ZI - frame dimensions?

Will post test pictures if and when I have some. Could take a while. Cheers.

Yes, they're from theoretical values.
Let us hear what your real-life situation with the Nokton-ZI pair would be like.

I don't know how helpful this is, but I use the Nokton 40 on my M6 with the 35 framelines very successfully. I find that I'd much rather frame inside the 35mm framelines than outside the 50mm framelines. And so far I haven't cut off anyone's head or feet.

It's a very simple modification to the lens that I did myself - just a few strokes of a small file on the appropriate flange on the lens mount. Someone posted some pictures on photo.net on how to do this, but they took off way too much metal. Just look at a 35mm lens flange vs. a 50 to see the very subtle difference.
