Thought I would pass on this info for anyone interested.

I have one of the above lenses which has always had a slightly loose front section. That is, you could rotate the front section a little. This could also be felt when focussing as backlash in the focussing.

Here's the fix.

Remove the front cap and hood. Unscrew the front optical assembly by using a wrench in the slots shown in the picture.

Make sure you use these outer slots, not the inner ones.

Now remove the front trim. This is just stuck on and is best removed by inserting a blade underneath and lifting it up.

Now unscrew the three screws which are visible and remove the front section of the lens. Then remove the aperture ring which wil now be loose. DON'T LOOSE THE BALL BEARING AND SPRING WHICH ARE UNDER THE APERTURE RING (if you're afraid of the spring shooting off or of dropping the ball bearing, put the whole lens into a plastic bag while removing the aperture ring).

You should now have this.

Note the two brass coloured pieces marked in the above picture. One of these is slotted - you should just about be able to see which without removing them. Remove the slotted one.

The problem is these two brass pieces are loose in their slots and that causes (or allows) the movement. To fix the problem, spread the two arms of the piece shown above such that it is a tight fit in it's slot.

Now reassemble everything. You may find it easier to reassemble the aperture ring if you remove the aperture actuating arm from it first.

Notes: Most of the screws seem to be locked with locktite or similar and so are difficult to remove. Make sure you're using the correct screwdriver or you'll damage the screw.

After fixing the above, you may still get a slight backlash in the focussing ring. This is caused by another part which sits in a slot in a similar way but isn't adjustable. It's also very difficult to get at as it requires further dismantling (from the back of the lens) and splitting the helicals. I would leave alone.

Hope this is useful.

Color-Skopar Loose Front End Fix?

Color-Skopar Loose Front End Fix?

I read this post with interest, but there are no photos (as described) attached.

I just purchased a 35 f2.5 Color-Skopar used, with a loose front assembly. Please let me know how I can tighten this up? (It's not the front element, but the front end (hood, threads, aperture ring, etc.) The back half of the lens is tight, for what it's worth...

Thanks for reading - any help is greatly appreciated.

This isn't likely to be the same thing. I suspect if you remove the front you'll find some screws similar to as described above (where it says "Now unscrew the three screws which are visible") and they will be loose.

I'll look to see if I still have the pictures that go with the above and repost them if I do but don't bank on it.

Success!!!

Success!!!

Again, thanks for re-posting the photos from your old post. I had success tightening up the loose front end of my CV 35 f2.5 Color-Skopar by folllowing your steps to a point. You were correct - all that needed to be done was a tightening of the screws under the front plastic "plate".

Thanks again. The lens now feels fantastic!

Just to add to this thread that I just bought a secondhand silver version with slightly wobbly filter ring (which I guess is caused by the three retaining screws under the front trim ring being a bit loose). I found that the front optical assembly is easily removed by using an appropriate sized "rubber bung" type wrench - the type micro tools sells for removing the front trim and lens elements - which is less risky to the paint finish than using a lens wrench.

My color-skopar 35 PII suffered from the loose front end too. Some time ago I had opened a thread in RFF with this problem, but couldn't find a solution that worked for me. Now, today I got ambitious and finally solved the problem (probably the same way christopher did) by disassembling the lens. Method is a bit different from the 28mm lens posted here, so I decided to write a short description and post some pics in the original thread:

Help! I still can't see the pictures. It's removing the Skopar front element I need to see.
Many thanks,
