The closer shot is wide-open shooting almost directly into strong sunlight.

The second shot is at f/4, with the sun over my right shoulder. From f/4 to f/11, this lens can sometimes be almost too sharp.

Film is Kodak Tech-Pan developed in Technidol. On the full-size scan you can count the threads of his shirt and see the hairs on the back of his neck...

Exposure (and focus?) a bit dodgy, but it gives you an indication of the bokeh:

Looks fine to me, so it's not just your LCD.
