I just wanted to share a modification I've done many months back. The Voigtlander Heliar 40/2.8 has a Leica M mound but no helicoid, it requires a focusing helicoid for use in mirrorless cameras.

I acquired one for a reasonable price and decided to modify it to M mount. I used a Russian Industar 50/3.5 as donor for the helical. The conversion is reversible, no modification on the lens. Unfortunately the donor helical used meant that the lens rotates when focused. But at least is quite usable on M cameras.

What was this lens originally used for if it didn’t have a focusing mount?

It has an M mount but only used in combination with a close-focus adapter for mirrorless cameras. It was usually paired with the Voigtlander VM-E close-focus adapter (for M mount to Sony E-mount) which has a 5mm helical, sufficient for a working focus range for this Heliar 40/2.8.

If you use it on M mount it is fixed at infinity. It was intended for Sony E mount using Voigtlander's M mount to E mount adapter that also had a focusing helicoid. The adapter allowed other M mount lenses to focus closer on a Sony by setting the lens to its closest focusing position and then using the helicoid in the adapter as a macro extension. It is a great adapter.

The new cosina has similar focusing knob as this modified one. Its a shame the new ltm version wasnt collapsible as the older model
