Voigtlander Nokton 50mm 1.5 or 1.1?

Update:

Things have taken a turn as I had a 50mm Summicron (Version 4 I believe) loaned to me for the day. Just got the results back and I am really impressed, so much so that I have abandoned the idea of purchasing either the Voigtlander 50mm 1.1 or 1.5 and have bought a Summicron instead! It should arrive in the next few days.

Thanks to everyone for your input, it was really interesting and helpful :)

Congratulations!

Look forward to seeing some of you images posted with the summicron.

I'm sure you can't go wrong with the Summicron. It is an excellent lens, and is significantly smaller than either of the CV lenses you were considering, assuming that is a factor. If you don't really need the additional speed it is a great choice. Of course, there is the fact that it costs about three times as much!

Cheers,
Dez

Why walk around with a 50 1.1

Why walk around with a 50 1.1

I don't use my Nokton 50/1.1 as a walk around lens. I use my ZM Planar 50/2 as my everyday lens. It is the perfect everyday lens.

I use the Nokton 50/1.1 when I need the low light capability it provides.

I do like the Nokton 50/1.5 but it unfortunately does not really have a real place in my workflow. The 50/2 does everything I need, and is much lighter to pack around, until it gets very dark. Then the 50/1.5 does not provide the advantage the 50/1.1 does.

Congratulations on the 50mm Summicron. I have 4 in various vintages. I had the Nokton 50/1.5 LTM when it came out. My oh my that Nokton is sharp and with contrast like shards of glass. It is not the look I want for b/w so sold it.

The saga continues...

Turns out I actually bought an Elmar 50mm 2.8. I know, I was also really confused when it arrived today. I checked my email receipt and it turns out I actually bought the wrong lens from the shop, probably due to my extreme excitement... I did think it was too good to be true, the lens only cost £300.

On the plus side the lens is totally mint, I know they suffer from haze really badly and I was instantly worried when I opened it, but it's the now the cleanest lens I own! I'm going to give it a few roll before I decide weather to sell it and actually buy the summicron.

Initial impressions are really good, the lens is quite weighty and looks to have a lot of aperture blades. Now doing some reading on the Elmar, anyone had any experience of it?

I think you bought the first version of the Elmar 50mm f/2.8. A great lens. Later on Leica introduced the Elmar-M 50mm f/2.8, a still greater lens. Your lens is good, but quite a different beast than the Nokton 50mm f/1.1.

Leica M5, Nokton 50mm f/1.1, Tmax400.

Erik.
