Voigtlander Nokton 50mm F1, Test Photos, Comparisons, and Discussion.

For me the Summilux 50mm f/1.4 v1 has the most beautiful bokeh of all.

I'll be happy to see your images posted here!

The Nokton 50/1.0 is an optical feat.

Brian,

No special reason that I posted all those over there, except that there’s almost no limit on file size and they load faster. I have more to come, and it’s pretty much an academic exercise. I’ve tried to frame shots which would display various aspects of rendering different types of things, flare, point light sources, focus falloff at varying distances, and last but least, sharpness and contrast. I’ve got an inordinate amount of fast Fifties, and bought the Nokton 50/1 to test it for myself, against many of the others, because It’s the only way I’ve ever learned what works for me. I was wondering if it could replace the 50/1 Noctilux, in terms of rendering, and was planning on selling off one or the other. The more I compare them, the less sure I am about which to keep. Some people will look at all those images and see them as looking all more or less “the same”. When I look at them they look similar, but not nearly the same in important ways. I thought it would be easy to decide which to sell, but it’s only become harder the more I compare them. The only thing I’ve ever disliked about the Noctilux is that the focus ring is too narrow and too close to the body. The Nokton, on the other hand, is a joy to use, everything is right where it feels like it should be.
The reason I was attracted to the 50/1 Nokton was the promise of exotic glass formulation used in the front element, more than anything else, something I’ve found to be at least as important as the optical design, if not more so. Also, my experience with the 75/1.5 Nokton which I found to be better, for my purposes, than the 75 Summilux, which I quickly sold off. Was thinking the 50/1 Nokton might be able to do the same thing to the Noctilux, just not sure yet. Seems superb though on its own terms.

I did not get a Nokton 75/1.5 because I have a Summilux 75/1.4. It feels good to own a Summilux. This does not have a lot to do with optical superiority.

I like the composition and choice of focus point, Helen. The noctilux would be nice to use. I don’t have the CV50/1.2 but have 50/1.1 and now also the 50/1.

Thank You Raid 😉
We will be waiting for your f1.1 to f1 comparison shoot out !

(Your other comment about the Psychic fair was too funny...

So if Stephen had not sold out all of his 50/1.1 Noktons at $700- maybe he'll decide to keep them another 5 years when they hit Noctilux prices. Remember when everyone dissed the Canon 50/0.95? I picked up a pair at $200 each.

Not to worry, he's already got one on flEa-B for a cool Grand.

It is amusing that the thread, ostensibly for images from the 1/50, has meandered into an homage for the 1,1 version and earlier 50 Summiluxii.

Beautiful portraiture. The bokeh juxtaposed to the sharpness at the point of focus, is much more pleasing than from the several examples of the ƒ/1 on the first page of the thread.

How does the ƒ/1,2 compare?

I might change the title of the thread-

And this is just a quick test. When things settle down, will do a better series on this lens. I'll bring the 50/1.1 and 50/1.2 along.

The 50/1.0 Nokton is very impressive, a real achievement. Photography is much more about technical perfection. I've been shooting with Cosina glass since 1971, bought an Argus/Cosina STL1000 with the 50/1.8 Cosinon when I was 13. I still have a pair of the Cosinons in M42 mount. Did a good CLA on them.

The V1 Summilux is an improved Summarit. The Summarit was optimized for F2.8 close-up, and suffers from build up of haze. I modified one of mine for wide-open use and keep the haze out.

I used side by side a 50/3,5 Cintar and a CV 50/1.

I remember when Raid stated he liked the Cintar on his C3. So i made one for him in Contax mount that he could use with the adapter on his Leica. Might be the only one!

My Summilux 50mm f/1.4 v1 is a special version in black paint to match the original black paint M3 and M2. The coating is different too, bright orange. No haze.

Thank you Brian for this one of a kind lens! It is RF coupled. The Cintar is an interesting lens, and I keep on looking for such lenses. I want to use a lens hood with it. Who here knows which lens hood would fit it?

You are very lucky! Do you know why the coating is different?

It is a lens with different glass; the normal v1 is not as sharp and has a blue/yellow coating. I think that glasses are used that needed a special coating. Very hard too, there is not a single scratch on the elements. Really a professional lens. Heavy used, but with perfect glass.

You have several special levees, Erik. Your photography does not depend on using specific lenses. You know this fact.

"Technically", The Summarit is the first Leica designed super-speed lens. The earlier Xenon was designed by Schneider. The Summarit is close - but the formula was revised and the optics are fully coated. The Summarit is also optimized for F2.8 when used close-up. But put an Orange filter on a Summarit, on my M Monochrom- and

Wide-Open,

At F2,

Really good focus. A deep filter shifts the focus towards infinity, so this unmodified Summarit is a good match for the M Monochrom.
