Vuescan gives a call for features.

Good, I've been working on a list of requests and possible improvements. Now is the time to send it. They are mostly small adjustments, though I do think the whole interface could use an overhaul.

+1 on the comment re: the whole interface, think capable AND user-friendly scanning software is what the vast majority of us want.

I cannot think of anything I would want that does not currently exist. It does everything that I want now.

I know some complain about the user interface but I am very accustomed to it. I hope if they change it there is also has a switch to revert to the older or classic mode.

Do they mean bugs as well?

I have frequently been running into an issue where Vuescan retains images from the LAST preview. I suspect this occurs when you don't select an image for a full scan, and some of the old preview images are not replaced.

There is also funky behavior when adjusting frames in preview mode (if these overlap even slightly, the app confuses the boundaries between adjacent frames). I can work around that but it is a continual pain.

All that said, it still is more usable than silverfast (sp?), which I have never actually gotten to do anything.

I usually have to relaunch Vuescan twice to get in to film scanning mode. The first launch the option isn't there.

Visualizing what it has locked would be great. When its running smoothly, I love it. Most of the time I can't get it to lock image color (I think thats the one, not 100% sure?), etc for all frames when scanning in color. Doing the exact same series of steps sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

I also think the GUI needs an overhaul. I'd really like to see some form of easy access for pre-made workflows via a button at the start for different films I scan. It got to be such a huge pain to use that I 've been scanning with Image Capture lately and Canon's awful software.

My biggest complaint is that it seems to hold onto the exposure settings for the film stock when I save them and then when I put new film in, I can't get the little frame on the screen to go away. So basically I have a rectangle where the last film was scanned that is adjusted one way, then outside of it is the default look. If that makes sense. Basically I have to shut the app down AND the scanner, unplug it from the USB then wait. Then replug, etc and go through the entire exposure and film base lock procedure every single strip of film and it just is not worth the trouble at that point.

The lock film base thing has been broken for me for a very long time. I don't even bother with it anymore.

This is for the mobile app, no?
Originally for the mobile app but I mentioned the desktop (computer based) version and he said to "Feel free to pass along desktop ideas too". I don't have any wireless scanners so can't really comment on the mobile app.

On the desktop version, I like to see a better histogram / curves - like toning interface. The one in there now is clunky at best.

I'd also like to see them support a Kodak / Creo scanner! If you think VueScan needs a better GU interface, you haven't seen anything until you try to figure out a Creo! Yikes!

Nice of the VueScan folks to ask for suggestions, great product overall.

I think they should focus their efforts on updating the interface of the normal version of Vuescan instead of branching out like this...

I agree. Vuescan lacks some of the most basic tools found in even the most mundane editor. Color balance, saturation, unsharp mask, contrast, warmer/cooler, etc... are all missing. There's that funky interface on the color tab with Neutral red green and blue, but it frankly sucks. You can right click a white spot but frankly that sucks too. You can have a calibrated scanner scanning a slide with a color chart on it and still have to mess with the colors just to get it to look like it does on the slide itself when held to the light. I know that some of this is due to the scanner, scanners condition, settings, etc... but it's not like Vuescan really gives you a lot of tools to fix it.

When I scan, I usually take a TIF from the negative, and then process it in lightroom, which seems to have much better tools for color balancing, sharpening, etc. Adobe LR is really good for that kind of work, so I never use another program's attempt at it anyway. Getting a flawless scan in the first place would be useful, but as long as it is done with software it is still processing the raw data anyway. May as well leave that part to the Pros.

Please no! I can only think of the new Windows 8 interface and all those "new and improved" interfaces I had to learn to use with the iterations of Word and Excel over the years.

One thing I love about the user interface for Vuescan is that it has remained consistent for at least 10 years.
