I have used other scanning software (mostly Epson Scan) for years, but I am a new VueScan user. I have run into a problem that must be very simple to solve, but I can't find the right box to check.
The issue is that the exposure of the Preview image and the Scan image do not match at all. There is no connection. I can adjust the Preview to my liking through the 'Color' tab, but the only changes to any adjustment that take effect when pushing Scan seem to be resolution and crop. The exposure remains the same with severely blown highlights. The Scan result is completely useless for anything but a simple text document. Half of the image area may be blown and can't be saved.
The workaround I have found is to set the Preview resolution to match your desired Scan resolution, as then VueScan simply reuses the Preview and crops it accordingly when creating the Scan. The problem is that this slows working considerably, as the whole scan area is scanned at high resolution. Defeats the point of Preview.
So, what setting am I missing?
I am running VueScan 9.5.45 on OS X 10.11.4.

Well, it worked for some time. And now the behavior seems random. It's mostly blowing the highlights.
The version I have is 9.5.51. The OS X version is 10.11.6.

I dislike VueScan for this among other reasons. I have found that any time you make an adjustment to any of the settings, you MUST immediately make another preview scan to get the settings to "stick". Very often, the result of that new preview scan isn't quite what you were expecting either, which means your final scan wouldn't have been quite right either. If you make an adjustment and go straight to the final scan, it seems to ignore what you adjusted. So, what setting am I missing?

Hi Lasse,
check Christophers advice. Works perfectly if you have LR, PS or another good Photo-editing SW in place. If you get still blown highlights check your negatives, probably they are too dense.

Lasse, are you scanning to TIFF or as RAW? And which type of film?
Vuescan applies a gamma curve to the Preview which means that if you scan RAW there will be a discrepancy between the preview and the scan. If you scan slide film that discrepancy (in my experience) is considerable.
