Vulcanite for the MP

Did you do the reskin yourself or send the camera away?

Jim B.

You can do it yourself. Just contact Aki Asahi and within a week you'll have your Pebble Emboss.
With a small, sharp screwdriver you pick up an edge of the original cover of the camera and then you can remove the cover entirely. The remains of the glue you can remove with naphta (lighter fluid). Take care you do not damage anything. The removal of the glue is somewhat more difficult on the flip up back cover than on other parts of the camera.
After this you just put on the new skin following the online instructions. In about 20 minutes you'll be amazed by the result.

At least from Leica you can get the a-la-carte vulcanite and also the original one from the M3 (although this is much more expensive). I am shipping an M3 to Solms that I just bought this week for a CLA and vulcanite replacement and received confirmation from Andreas that they have all options available.

Cheers,

I seriously wonder if that's true. Leica stopped producing the original vulcanite (in fact it is guttapercha) with the introduction of the M6 in 1984. I never heard it was available again.
Besides, some people say that the material (not the texture) changed already with the introduction of the M4-2. The material on the M4-2 is supposed to be artificial, not natural as the original guttapercha is.

Erik:

I went back to Andrea's email and you are correct, the original Vulkanit is not available anymore but they can replace the complete housing as this is an original part they still have...

Cheers,

The vulkanit that Leica offers is available for purchase or installation from them for $150 USD. This is the same covering that is found through the A la Carte program, and that is on several special edition cameras (MP3) and the latest M8.2.

Just an update on this cost to which Andy refers. I called Leica USA and they told me it would now cost $175 USD for the vulkanit covering for one MP. If I had them install it, I was told it would be $250 USD. While I like the vulkanit covering, and I would definitely apply it myself, the Griptac covering from cameraleather has that industrial look that I think goes so well with the functionality of the MP. And the main tactile characteristic is so 'grippy' ;p One thing is for sure, though, the default shark skin covering on the MP begs to be replaced...

Of course there are people to whom this matters, but in case anyone's insecurity is being fed by discussions of grippier Leica coatings, I've been using Leicas for 35 years, with cameras ranging from 1929 to brand new, sometimes in seriously hot, humid conditions (Indian monsoon, for example) and have yet to have one slip out of my fingers. Like most Leica 'problems', this one is commonly overstated on the internet, unless you have unusually slippery fingers.

Cheers,

R.
