Did anyone see the interesting prog about W,Eugene Smiths visit to the south Wales coal field for 'Life' in 1950? The prog was part of 'Aunties' series about the 1950's which have been very good so far.

Smith was sent to the Rhonda by 'Life' owner Mr Luce to 'expose' the lack of progress of the Atlee Labour government in an attempt to influence the 1950 general election results. However, Smith became massively impressed by the Rhonda mining communities and his gritty pix gave an impression of great strength and character to the new labour hopes of social reform in a Britain devastated by war. Most of these great pix were thrown in a box and left until this programme was made 55years later.

The world famous pic of the three miners looking back over their shoulders was one of only about 4 frames VERY selectively shot!....so much for the motor drive!

Throughout the prog the same pix of Smith himself were repeated,...one showed him with early rangefinder with turret finder and some interesting looking accessories,..the camera bearing the word 'Canon' on the top left hand side.......Was this a 'V' or 'VT'..??......what were the weird fittings on the camera?

As it happens, most of the original negs and contacts looked like medium format material..........Smith was an American photographer so do any of the US people here know about him and his methods and equipement?

I only caught the end of the programme but I wish I'd seen it all. The photographs really were stunning.

I don't know which Canon it was but the viewfinder looked very much like a Leica VIOOH. There was (I think) a Wray copy of this finder though that looked identical and maybe other copies? The film he used seemed to be Kodak Super XX as well, one which seems to have been largely forgotten since the appearance Tri-X.

Oh dear, how sad is it to have spotted that when I only saw 10 minutes of the programme....?!?

It is interesting that there is so little mention of his Minamata series. Very moving photos. Not that many of his others weren't of course. But I once read some speculation that that series may have contributed to his death. Apparently the industries polluting the area realized the impact of his photos there, and hired thugs and he was very severely beaten. According to one article by a person who knew him, that person felt he never fully recovered from the damage caused by the severe beating.

If you ever have the chance to look at a book of his photos, you will be moved.

There's a big book of his stuff called something like "Let Truth Be The Predjudice"; I got it off Amazon recently. There's some of all the stuff mentioned, and lots more. And the usual interesting bio. He was in interesting guy. And it's a good sized book for pressing negs flat.
