There's a show in NYC that opened yesterday about the famed Jazz Loft where Eugene Smith spent eight years hosting and documenting live music. The show is at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. I haven't been to see the exhibit yet, but my sister-in-law attended the opening last evening and snapped this image with her iPhone...

From her e-mail to me: "
This is the lens Eugene Smith used to take more than 20,000 pictures from his window on his loft.

"Sam Stephenson bought the lens from Smith's son."

a link to the website for the project and exhibit. it's in NYC thru May 22, 2010.

there's a nice image of Eugene looking out the window of the loft with a slew of cameras in front of him including three M's and some big SLR.

if you're into music and not just photography, the website also has links to the very good NPR series by Sara Fishko on the Jazz Loft. Great listening. Highly recommended.

imagine this guy with Thelonious Monk dancing around in his loft at all hours of the night.
