Something a bit different, a flying boat. A few weeks ago one of the last Martin Mars was brought to the aircraft museum near Victoria on Vancouver Island. The plane is now on permanent display at the museum. First built for use in WW2 heavy transport they were later converted to water bombers for fighting forest fires. The arrival was a big event with a fly past before touching down in the bay near Victoria airport.

In 1972 I was stationed On USS Suffolk County, (LST 1173). The ship was lucky enough to be scheduled to spend Christmas and New Years Eve in the harbor at Monaco, and I was lucky enough that my wife Barbara was able to be there to meet the ship. She was so proud of getting a room fronting right on the harbor looking out at the yachts moored across the way. She did wonder why the smaller vessels all seemed to be absent from the front of the room. Sure enough we pulled in and docked right alongside the harbor wall in front of the hotel. The view from the room was a big gray hull with 1173 on the side. Never mind, it was one of the best Christmases we ever had and I didn't have to walk far to get to the ship. (not my picture, so excuse that). We have not been back, but from recent pictures much has changed there. I don't think a 400-foot ship would get in there now.
