A good friend served on the New York (BB 34), Texas' only sister ship. He was a young well-educated ensign and was made ship's historian (by a captain who probably didn't know what to do with him). He documented her action while he was aboard, which spanned from the bombardment of Iwo Jima and Okinawa to their return to New York in the fall, after war had ended. He tried to save her as a NY harbor museum ship, but there wasn't enough interest. She survived 2 atomic blasts and was sunk in postwar training exercises off Hawaii. Incredibly tough ships.

The old battleships had beautiful officer's quarters. There were no berths left in officer's country and the captain put him in the unused admiral's cabin, which was ridiculously good luck. Aside from the constant threat of a horrible death from a kamikaze, he had a charmed service experience and loved that ship.
