The far bridge is the Carlton Bridge. It is a vertical lift bridge over the Kennebec River in Bath and used to carry both trains on the lower level and Route 1 traffic on the upper level. With a lot of small boat traffic causing the bridge to open and just two lanes on the road it was quite a bottleneck when we moved here in '78. It still carries rail traffic, but Route 1 traffic is now carried by the Sagadahoc Bridge in the foreground. No delays and an immense improvement for the heavy Route 1 traffic and the town of Bath, where traffic used to back up for miles for every 20 foot fishing boat with a tuna tower.

The Frank J. Wood Bridge in Brunswick, Maine is being replaced, after a long fight by some residents to save it because of its scenic qualities. I have lived in this area a long time. The bridge was under constant repair and continual painting, and is now wisely load limited. Some things just have to go eventually, (says the 76 YO man). The new bridge may not be classically beautiful, but it will still look out at one of the prettiest urban river scenes in Maine.

The Astoria (OR) - Megler (WA) Bridge. When it opened the ferry closed on the same day. When the bridge was paid off the toll booths were removed. When it was finished a road ran from Canada to Mexico, US 101. It is the longest some kind of truss bridge in the country. Here's the Wikipedia link if you want to read up on it.
