my problem with IR photography, film back when it was available, later with a X100 modified to full-spectrum, was that it was a gimmick in order to make boring landscape or still life scenes seem interesting. these were photographs I would never have taken otherwise. cool at first but rarely does it produce a memorable photograph.
I also think that the vast majority of people who might see an IR photograph have no clue that it's an in-camera effect and therefore dismiss it as Photoshopped. red grass? white trees?
Richard Mosse's IR series taken in the Congo is one noteable exception and I think that's largely because he included people in many of his photographs.
