W/NW: Dogs

Christie had two stressful days. Thunderstorms that causes anxiety attacks one day and yesterday she spent most of the day at the groomers. She needed some rest and didn't wanna be supermodel.

Dogman, our dog suffers from same trauma. She has a Thunder shirt that minimizes that fear. Highly recommend. Available on line.

I've been reading about the Thunder Shirt and I think I'll give it a try. Christie begins to get nervous well in advance of a thunderstorm arriving. She's a dependable weather forecaster for us.

It's funny how different dogs' personalities are. Mine does not care about thunderstorms in the least (in fact she has gone outside with me in the middle of a hurricane more than once), but she is a nervous wreck about almost everything else. For example, for some reason, she is terrified of the sound of a diesel engine or a truck backing up.

Thunder storms and fireworks are the worst.

When I was a youngster we had a black curly cocker spaniel named Jet. I think he came to like 4th of July fireworks and thunderstorms because he had trained us to then let him in through the back door into the utility room. This was a special privilege for an outdoor dog and he would wiggle all over excitedly and test access to the kitchen too. No! He was probably wet too, as the house was on the shoreline. He would also sing/howl along with the fire siren when it went off to call volunteer firefighters to go to the facility up the hill behind the house. I guess he felt an obligation to help. Good Boy!

When Christie was a puppy, thunderstorms were interesting to her. She would jump up on the back of a chair by a window and watch the lightning and seemed totally absorbed by the light show. Somewhere along the line she did a 180 and became terrified when she heard thunder. She starts to tremble at the sound of distant thunder. Being a 'mama's girl', Christie follows her around and sits as close to her as possible during a storm. Fireworks? Oh God! July 4 and New Year's Eve are nights from hell around here. We have tranquilizers prescribed by her vet but they do little to calm her. Gonna try a Thunder Shirt.
