Habana Vieja 2010 - Pepe indicates his displeasure with the Cuban government by displaying his empty refrigerator. His job is pedaling a bicitaxi but he said it was too hot to work. The Cuban government asked Pepe in 1980 if he wanted to remain in prison or be sent to the Mariel harbor where he would be put on a boat to the US. In 1990, a judge in Miami asked Pepe if he wanted to be sent to prison in Florida or be extradited back to Cuba.

Town of Australia, Cuba - 2009: Australia was a one industry town until 2002 when the government cannibalized the sugar mill for parts to keep other mills running. It has been a town with no jobs since. Everyone just gets by on government benefits. It was the first place I saw where the store sold 3 cigarettes for 1 peso (equivalent 4 cents US) because so few could afford a whole pack. This woman with her far off gaze reflected the mood of the entire town.

I really enjoy the pictures and the stories behind them.
 
Daytona Beach Boardwalk 2005 - Steve displays a photo of himself taken 48 years ago when he opened his pizza stand. This was his last day in business there as the city had taken his business along with others by eminent domain to tear them down and replace it with more upscale businesses. The city's efforts had mixed success.
Today, 17 years later, a large print of this photo hangs in Steve's new pizza restaurant a hundred yards away from this old one. Steve says if business ever slows down, he will have time to let me make a new photo of him holding this one.

Bay St. Louis Mississippi 2006 - Charles Gray stands in front of his government furnished FEMA trailer that replaced his antebellum mansion that was swept away by hurricane Katrina several months earlier. His Rolls Royce Silver Cloud was out of town being serviced and was undamaged.
