w/nw Environmental Portraits

3 old ones as I sort through some old folders....

A fav of mine of a dear friend, late 90's on our way to London Town with the band, where we almost made it event free until we crashed into a Police Van and shuffling of goodies stashed. Oh what fun we nearly didn't have.

I asked my wife many years ago to go to the V&A [Hotel] in Manchester as she wanted to try some 'Paparazzi' Photography, as I used to get asked to do these things but I never really did, as not my thing, so, I sorted out a Camera for her and her friend to go as a test, as I thought maybe she could do some for me, she knows her way around a Camera so thought why not....

This was the first and last time, as I tried to explain, you are there to be Professional and for pics, not drooling.

These are all prints originally.

One of the few Environmental Portraits in this thread. Often the environment is missing, sometimes the portrait.

Also, the "environment" provides context to the essential identity of the subject, like an artist in her/his studio. It isn't just any random environment.

Duncan was the scientific glass blower at the university and also a very good photographer. He's making a quartz dewar so we can run UV spectra at liquid nitrogen temperatures. Quartz is difficult to work because of the high temperatures needed, he's using an oxy-hydrogen flame. M4, 35mm Summilux

Not only is this a superb photograph it's also an outstanding example of an environmental portrait! Well done!

All the best,
Mike
