^^^ Looks like a Yamaha SR500, Mike! Single-cylinder 500cc 4-stroke. A sweet ride and very good looking. One for a purist. I almost bought one many years ago...

Hi Doug,

I'm pretty sure it was a Yamaha SR400. Same thing as the SR500 just a tad smaller. The SR400 might only be sold domestically in Japan; I'm not sure.

My last motorcycle was a Yamaha SR500. I bought it used and put a coke bottle muffler on it so that it resembled a classic British bike. It was a lot of fun to ride but on long trips it would give me a sore butt!

I'm a fan of the SR/XT500 Yamahas too, Doug and Mike, having owned both in the past. The current fleet is both BMW's, a 1970 750 and 2009 800. Pic Leica M6, Sonnar 50, Delta 100 in Xtol.

John and Mike, I envy your experiences with the SR500! I did ride one once from the Yamaha dealer to try it out. The starting drill discouraged me, along with the thumping. But there's that coolness factor. I did buy a Yamaha 500 twin for my wife... DOHC with balance shafts, very smooth and comfortable, the downside being weak electrical generation and battery. At the time I rode a Yamaha 750 triple but it didn't last long as I was annoyed at the engine vibration that came to a peak every 1000 rpm. If they'd fitted it with balance shafts too it might have been ideal. To get back to smoother running I turned-in the 750 on a Yamaha XS Eleven, an 1100 cc four that was the best bike I ever had. Put a lot of mileage on that one over about 12 years. It unfortunately turned into a Toyota MR2 after progressive hearing loss resulted in a balance problem.

BMW 75/5. Almost bought one of these new from a dealer around 72-73. Then, overnight, my down payment evaporated when the US dollar was devalued. Such is life.
 
Thanks Doug and Mike, I count myself lucky to own the 1970 bike and still be able to ride it. I bought this one seven years ago. Later this year it will be 50 years since I bought my first similar BMW in December 1972, so it will be a special memories time.

In reference to an earlier remark about 400cc (Japan) vs 500cc elsewhere , if my memory serves me , Japan used to have a 400 cc
limit on motorcycles sold in Japan , long since removed . Others may remember this . Peter
