A current thread on what to do/bring to New Orleans has me wanting to see more from the Big Easy.

I'll start it with a poor picture from a digital camera (I wasn't shooting film in 2005, the last time I visited). Till the 1950's, this was Mr. Sam's (my grandfather) Grocery store. My father and all the other 8 family members lived above it.

I'll post something when I sober up on Wednesday. We are having Mardi Gras tomorrow, after all.

Steve,

Where was Mr. Sam's? I lived in New Orleans from 1970 to 2005. I don't miss too much about New Orleans. The food maybe. That's about it. I'll see what I can dredge up in the archives. I mostly left town to take pictures.

I think it was on Chartres. In any case, it closed in the 50's when my Grandfather died.

This is the only good picture I took yesterday. An old friend, doing what you do when it's Mardi Gras ... dress up, wander around, and end up drinking beer on the neutral ground (that's the median, y'all), wondering why Mardi Gras Indians are NEVER on time. There's a whole lot to hate about New Orleans, but there's still a lot to love too.
