In old age our faces often reflect the traces of our life's journey, of happy and sad times, joys and hardships. Bodies also reflect the scars and other evidence of how our lives have been lived. Photographs of people in old age are often beautiful; sometimes sad and poignant, sometimes joyful and funny!

Aged people have always inspired good work, from David Octavious Hill and Robert Adamson's photogravure of Dr Munro in the late 1800s and Steichen's of Lenbach in 1903, HCB's portrait of Pierre Bonnard in 1944, to Willy Ronis's warm portrait of Robert Doisneau two years before his death in 1992 and Jane Brown's magnificent portrait of Samuel Beckett. And then there are all the reportage photos, and personal, family photos.

Life expectancy is increasing in most countries. This is a rich subject. Share your pictures of people in old age but please, try only to include photographs you consider make a strong statement about a person or the condition of old age. Although this is W/NW, a title and/or short description might be useful to add context or meaning to the photograph.

I'll start this off with a photo of a personal friend and neighbour I've known all my life. Marj is 94 and she shares her house with her dog and a few grandchildren. She has a simple homespun philosophy and is stoical about life.

Not what it seems - this is a very realistic art installation on the theme of old age at AGNSW, Sydney. The flare and scratches were accidental when trying to extract the film from broken camera.

My friend Pam at 79, widowed and living life to the full, here with one of her grandchildren. Now 82 and madly in love again, skipping around with joy like a teenager.

Lovely portrait, Lynn. Judging from this photo, Marj looks like she would be a real hoot to chat with :)

Here's a shot I took in the park just near the weird pyramid building (which you can just make out in the far right corner) in the center of Tirana, Albania. I asked in English if I could take their photo, and they answered yes in Italian.

Shot this from the car driving slowly--75mm cropped 50% probably. I have photographed her more recently at the farmers market, but that image is in my catalog somewhere....

Sister Margaret was feted at St Mary's on her 90th birthday or thereabouts, just before she left her independent apartment for a senior assisted living home for her order. We worked together briefly on an art exhibit by rehabilitated ex-felons at the gallery whose board of directors I represented. For many years in her retirement she ran art workshops at the county jail. This was the last time I saw her before she died. The line of people coming to her for a word or two, though really for a blessing since she was beatific, was very long.
