I was surprised by the photo of Hermans in the museum: there are very few photos of him when he's not completely in control of his surroundings.

In France he was completely unknown. Later he moved to Brussels - he was very popular in Belgium - but I've never heard he had any problems there.
I've been often with him in The Netherlands - walking around - but also there he had never any problems with the "ordinary people".
He was a big Leica-fan.
