That skipper must know what he's doing, Paul. Doesn't look like all those barges'll fit through the space under the bridge. Those barges seem empty; what do they usually carry?
 
hey, Ted.
yeah, that tow - a smallish one; a standard tow would have another row of three barges - will fit just fine under the bridge, which is a half mile from my front yard where i made the shot.
those high and dry barges will be filled with coal of one type or another. this part of alabama is rich in coal. some goes to the port of mobile for shipment around the world, some is turned into coke for steel plants. most, i reckon, is used used by steam-powered electricity-generating plants.
 
Paul, if this is near your house, you live in a wonderful setting. I especially like the little path along the river bank.
