picnic - mid 18th century (denoting a social event at which each guest contributes a share of the food): from French pique-nique, of unknown origin.
Wikipedia suggests the first mention of the word pique-nique dates from about 1692; certainly picnics were an accepted social custom by the time Joseph Niépce made his first photograph in 1826 or 1827. Artists like François Lemoyne in 1723 and Thomas Cole in 1846 were romanticising picnics, but in photography the best known picnic photo is probably Cartier-Bresson's Au Bord de la Marne, although I'd welcome other suggestions!

Do hanami parties (sakura viewing picnics) count?
The sushi plates and individual chopsticks and soy sauce are ready and waiting for the people to arrive, while a single girl holds the spot.
The new employees have prepared a sheet for the office hanami party and are wiping it down with wet tissues. Dedication!
Not sure what the teddy bear is for here.
No shoes on the sheet.
