It was built by Guilford Washington Cox, a Confederate officer, after the Civil War. It was at one time the local post office.

The house was occupied until the mid-1980's. The last resident passed away unexpectedly. No one ever moved back in after that.

I always amazed by how people just "throw away" places like this.

I'm trying to get permission to get onto another abandoned farm. The house's roof is beginning to cave in, so I want to get in pretty quick. It is a huge, old plantation house built before the Civil War. At one time the operation had its own cabinet shops (they built coffins too), store, and cotton gin. The broken window in post #46 was taken there and was the cabinet shop's. My problem is I don't want to trespass and I can't get in touch with the owner.

I advise the students I mentor not to ever trespass to get a photo, but I'm thinking I might have to go against my own rule.

Indeed, this is a mansion. Designed by Stanford White. Recently purchased by a developer. Not quite sure what's to come next. The house is on 19 acres, so I suspect they'll do some subdividing. Hopefully, the house gets saved. They've already removed some architectural elements that were dangerously deteriorated and have also filled in a swimming pool. Perhaps the new owner has enough sense of preservation to restore this building to something of its once-former grandeur.

This second image shows where a large covered porch has already been demolished. It was probably beyond repair.

A formerly spectacular terraced garden with reflecting pool. On a previous visit, this entire area had been taken over by underbrush, so perhaps this is good sign that the new owner has at least some small amount of respect for the property.

This area is where the swimming pool had been, just steps outside the door. It's been filled in sometime in the past six months.
