Its the Royal Hawaiian!

Survey says ... ... {long awkward pause} ... **DING!**

I take it you know it? Stayed there recently? :) :)

Here's another one from the same general area, but this one looks like it's had some recent TLC. Do I sense a re-opening maybe? :)

Ha ha, well, I do know OF it. I had planned to shoot there last time I was in California, but didn't make it a huge priority. Some friends were there just before me and they were greeted by some "characters" there demanding money just for the privilege of taking photos there.

I was doing night photography down around Barstow, Yermo and, yes, Amboy but the Hawaiian was just enough of a distance away from the other locations, I wound up missing it. Maybe next time!

It just amazes me how far downhill the smaller communities in that part of the country have plunged! It seemed like up until the Great Recession, Baker (where Royal Hawaiian is/was) was a thriving desert community. The Bun Boy was a must-stop for breakfast along that route. Nowadays Baker looks more like a skid-row wino alley type of place. :(

And Baker seems to be doing well compared to many other places. Daggett was particularly depressing on this last trip. Ghost town in the making!

Just drive a couple of miles off of 40 (pick a road, any road) and you're bound to see stuff like this:

Indeed. If not for its importance to the railroad, Daggett would just be a dusty, empty spot on the map. Same with Yermo.

Did you see the Rock-a-Hoola water park, just north of Yermo? Its been heavily tagged and vandalized in just a few short years. Quite a mess.

I think I know what/where that is. IIRC it's just north of the southbound checkpoint on 15, correct? IIRC there's some kind of a tower there. I've never ventured off the highway there.

It might {wheels turning } be kind of an interesting place to stop and shoot when I'm out there over the holidays when it's not so {expletive}ing hot.
