W/NW Self Portrait

Peter that has a very professional finish. I like it. No-one could say it wasn’t taken by someone else with your M3 as a prop.
Thank you Richard. It took a bit of fritzing about to get it right. The photo was taken, of course, using a large mirror hanging on the opposite wall. Essentially, I had to focus on the camera using the reflection from the mirror, then position my face to be the same distance as the camera and fire the shutter using the timer. Metering was via a hand held meter using ambient light measurement. I feel certain I stopped down somewhat too, to give me some grace. I made several shots and surprisingly most of them turned out. Of course, I flipped the image in post so I was not wearing my watch on the wrong wrist etc. It all just took a bit of thinking thru. I cannot recall the film I used but almost certainly it would have been my preferred "go to" film for B/W back when I took this - Ilford XP2.

From the archives.... While working at Sydney university in 1967 was able to luck into a vacant spot on the Biology field trip in spite of being a chemist... ;-) They were headed to Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef which had a marine research station. Got to see some amazing stuff but it spoiled me for doing any diving back in Canada ..... Burrrrrr

I rented a Nikonos from a Sydney shop and got a few under water shots. A friend took this one of me as I dove.

Incredible. I worked in that room for several months of each year from 1994-2000. Those labs, along with much of the research station, burnt down in 2007: Fire at research station. The research station has been rebuilt and is probably ‘better’ but I loved the old space redolent of decades of work.

1967 - did you know Peter Young?

The name rings a bell Marty, but it was too many years ago to remember much. Sad about the fire, my stay was an experience of a lifetime. Best of all there were lots of post docs to annoy with questions. What a small world it is.

Indeed, the world is always small, too small in fact, except when it is too big.

Nice knife! So few men really know how to accessorize an outfit. ;)
