Taken at Dee Why beach, Sydney on the morning of 07 September, 24hrs after a fatal shark attack. Being mid-morning on a Saturday there were a lot of surfers and swimmers in the water at the time. #6437
All beaches within a few miles were closed for 48-72hrs. The shark was identified as a white shark, estimated at 4-5m. It has not been caught.

This was painted in a bike lane on a secondary, 35mph street that threads through residential suburbs. Years ago a cyclist was killed while riding to college at about this same spot in the bike lane. No Ghost Bike memorial was erected here because this spot is adjacent to an empty lot that’s never been developed with housing, one of the few left in NE ABQ.

There are a number of a Ghost Bike memorials around ABQ, located where cyclists were killed in traffic. One of the more notorious is the intersection of two secondary, slow speed limit streets where BOTH intersecting streets have dedicated bike lanes, one being 35mph and the other 30mph speed limits.

To the best of my knowledge few car drivers have ever been prosecuted in ABQ for killing a cyclist in traffic. In NM, cyclists are expected to ride the streets like motor vehicles and hence a cyclist killed in traffic is treated as a traffic accident.

Of course, some of these accidents are the cyclist’s fault. But often these deceased cyclists are being hit from behind in a dedicated bike lane, that requires crossing a solid white line to do so. Motorists are also required to maintain a five foot clearance when passing cyclists, but that doesn’t seem to be enforced either.
