So Rob, what do you think of the boken of the v.3 Summicron vs. the v.2? Apparently much more interesting than the WTC on Sept 11th.

I will probably come up there again for 9/11/11. I usually stay at the Hostel in the upper West Side, on N. Amsterdam around 103rd. I will drop you a note before then.

The thing I personally remember most about 9/11 was that here in Chicago the sky was perfectly clear, not a trace of cloud, and of course there were no contrails either. It was a very eerie feeling. I knew that things would never be the same for our country or the world. I didn't think to take pictures, or I would post one.

Melvin, I grew up in Franklin Park, near O'Hare airport. Although I had moved away several years prior to 9/11, just the thought of a quiet sky in my old neighborhood strikes me as incredibly eerie.

Bob, I wouldn't know a v2 from a v3 if one of them bit me on the ass, though I might have shot these with one of those, but as you imply, who the hell cares. in fact, these are utterly lousy images as they're scanned from ancient contact sheets (the negatives are probably here somewhere. as you suggest, the sentiment is all that really counts. I spent some time with a friend who worked across the street. I think he's still haunted by people jumping from the towers. Do give me a holler when you'll be up here. I'd love to meet you in person.

Joe, if you did live nearby, I know you'd have a personal reminiscence and equally personal photos.

Melvin and Greyscale, the quiet here that day was far beyond eerie. I live about 20 miles west of Newark (now Liberty) Airport. The only thing in the air for the next two days were fighter jets.

Joe, understood. It is only a 3 hour flight from FL. But I will say that one day trip was one of the most memorable I have made.

When I shook the hands of the five surviving firefighters from "Ten House" (FDNY company 10, across Liberty St. from the WTC) I had to think that sure was a bigger deal than having lunch with President Reagan.

I watched a woman carrying flowers and wearing a FDNY shirt trace her finger down a large bronze tablet listing names of FDNY firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice. When she finally stopped on a name and stood there, I looked at her face and realized the connection. I just said "I am sorry".

I had seen the WTC as a pile of debris before. But meeting the survivors and the families of those who did not was emotional. It hammered home that it was all about the people, not the building.

I have roll of film awaiting development of a memorial in Stirling, NJ constructed from some steel from the towers. Coming upon this memorial by accident a few weeks ago, I have to admit that it brought tears to my eyes. Still staggering nine years on.

I shot this in August, but just processed and scanned it. this is steel from the towers at a memorial in Stirling, New Jersey, a town that lost some friends and neighbors. There are 200-year old bells from an old church mounted on the monument. A very peaceful and solemn site (and sight, too).
