Mike,
I have to learn how to cite an image. I would appreciate it if someone teach me!
Anyway the one right before the perplexed lady, is an example of windfoil, that is, the foil (the device under the board that allows to fly) is attached under a windsurf.
As you can see there are so many possibilities!
It is not that popular: wingfoil (your three photos before "waiting for sails) seems definitely to be the discipline that is caching on!

This Miura Peninsula looks like quite a nice spot for windsurfing!
My guess is that when you get out you have the wind on your right hand side.
My favorite side!

My avatar refers to Maui. I was planing ashore with the wind on my left.
Thus one gets out with the wind on the right. Just like Miura if my guess is correct!
It was on 2005 or 2007.
The spot is called Camp One.
Not as famous as the mythical Hookipa, but very nice indeed, expecially for intermediate levels like me.
If one prefers wind on the left, then he better go to Diamond head in Oahu.

In my experience they're very friendly too!

Mike,
what it looks to me is that they made a tack transition simultaneously, for some reason.
It does not seem a regatta because there is no buoy in sight.
I wonder why the sails are numbered. And they look all identical!
It is not the kind of numbers the athletes have, where there are some letters indicating the nation and then a number.
For example, the famous champion Robby Naish (who won 24 world windsurfing crowns from 1977 to 1984) has a sail number US1111.

Hi Paul,
I'm pretty sure that they're all students of a local Windsurfing School and that the windsurfers are the property of the school; hence they're identical.
All the best,
Mike

Best sport in the world IMHO - just love the feeling. Have never been able to combine it with photography myself - partly because I am on the water til I am totally exhausted, and partly because I leave the car unlocked...so leaving expensive camera gear there is scary. Nice to see the pictures here.
