This is my first test of my W Tanar 35mm F3.5. I purchased this lens a few months ago with a Tanar IV-S body. The test body used here though is a Canon 7. The film is recently expired Kodak Gold 100 (processed and scanned at Walgreens). The lens had a UV filter in front of it which did a pretty good job suppressing "white" sky. The test subject is my usual: buildings and houses in Pasadena.
The lens itself is a pretty amazing bit of chromed metal. It is small, heavy, and naturally very well made. It seems to have a good deal of quality machining. My example has excellent glass and cosmetics, but the focus is somewhat stiff -- usable, but could use a re-lube.
The images have had some minor exposure tweaking and just enough crop to eliminate the film edges, but no sharpening or color balancing. RFF apparently reduces inline images to email sorts of sizes (like 800X500) so the automatically loaded images are less sharp than the intrinsic ones. I've provided links to 1024X768 sized scans which give a closer idea of the true sharpness (but still not full justice - digital meets its limitations when computers get in the way).
My impression of the performance is that it is contrasty and colorful (the lens has deep purple coatings), but soft on the corners at some settings, and even has a tad of vignetting at the very corner edge on some frames at some f-stops (this could be the Canon 7 baffles causing this though -- A Canon P can do this for sure). The lens has respectable center sharpness. My summary: A fun lens to use and nice to collect and admire.
