Well, now i went and done it...after saying I would never clean my Summarit lens. Went and did it anyway.

Did a photo gig at the Mercedes Benz Club of America, Peachtree Section at Vogel State Park on Saturday with the Nikon digital and the M3 + Summarit. Should pick up the scans tomorrow and see how the lens did after cleaning. Half of the first roll was pre-cleaning and the last half was post-cleaning.

I must admit I am quite curious as to the revised performance and what adjustments will be needed to get the results I am looking for...:)

Hi Dave. The Summarit is one of Leica's most character-ful lenses. I used to have one. I'm looking forward to seeing the results too.

Hmmm...

It appears that the car show was not the best test of the newly cleaned Summarit lens. Shooting on a cloudy day with the D40 and then using the M3 with 400 film did not exactly show any real character. The D40 is capable of terrific images even using the fill - in flash:

The M3 +_ Summarit with Kodak 400 film does a nice job at F11:

Think I will try some Ilford B/W indoors at wide open apertures and see what happens.

The Summarit loves light ! That`s my experience with that lens and - as Frank stated - it is one of Leica`s lenses with the most "character".

Maddoc,

I agree totally! As on this thread, you can easily see what the light does:

In relatively low light, it appears that the Summarit is acceptably sharp and the color rendering is very good as shown in the recent car show comparison with the D40. It also shows that the light in the background is more noticeable with the Summarit than with the D40.

There does not seem to be any difference between the images pre-cleaned and post-cleaned in these situations. But, I bet there will be a noticeable difference with the lens wide open.:)

Dave,

the thread you mentioned plus the photos from a friend (junku_newcleus at flickr) convinced me to get the Summarit. :) Mine is a LTM version and also had to be serviced, Sherry did a great job !

Cheers,

Gabor

There must be a DIFFERENCE i would think
wide open for sure
and at Night
when the summarit drinks what light it can find !!
:D

Gabor,

The thread I mentioned was of some help to you in choosing the Summarit? Cool...just when I thought I had nothing to give to this forum.

I am doing my best to understand the creative abilities of this lens and so far, so good. Would love to see some of your results!:)
