Walgreen's house-brand @ $1.50/roll

The only Walgreens in my town has the 200ISO film for sale. The manager and I had a good conversation this morning and she said the film is actually Agfa. Anyway, she said she looked it up in her catalogs and the film is rebranded Agfa. I wouldn't know one way or the other.

The box says "Product of Japan" so it can't be Agfa.

I think it's Fuji alright. Except we can't be sure to which specs they make the stuff that gets sold off-brand. It's been working fine for me and at the price, I'm not complaining.

Thank you for the heads up, I bought a box on the way home.

FWIW, my local Target will develop only for 99 cents. I even got them to not cut the negatives apart. They cut them into 4 frames per strip and I prefer five per strip for the sleeves I use.

The kids at my nearest Walgreens, in the town known as 'Eusless' can barely figure out how to find the price on the computer cash box. Too much hair spray or something.
It got so bad, I had to go across the street to CVS. They seem to have the exact same deal with their house brand and the attendant seemed to know a tiny bit more about the subject of film.

Reid: Does Target actually do the processing on site, or do they send it out?

Jack: When I first started bringing my film into Walgreen's a couple years ago, it seemed like no one except the department manager knew where the "negs only" key was on the register. But eventually, they all learned and now I don't even have to mention any special instructions. It's got to the point that when I walk through the door, if any of the employees sees me, they just ask, "Dropping off, Mr. Ehlers?". I say "Yes", they grab my film, and I turn right around and head out the door. They mustn't want me to do anymore shopping! LOL

Curious, for those of you who live near both a Walgreens and a Costco, do you still consider 24 exp. rolls a deal (vs a 36 exp. roll), since Costco's develop and scan most any 35mm roll for the same price?

It takes too long to find 36 things to take a picture of. It's not a money thing for me. So yes, I think.

I think it was 2006 when Walgreens switched from Agfa to Fuji for their house-brand film. I actually liked the 200. The 400 was very "ok", and to say that the 800 "sucked" was to pay it a compliment. 🙁 Nasty! 🙁

They had some great close-out prices on the old stuff and I actually had 70-some rolls of the 200, all used up long ago.

The thing is, around here at least, you can usually find the genuine green box Fuji film cheaper than the rebranded stuff at Walgreens. Yes, when they have a sale on the Walgreens stuff it is a great bargain!

dmr, as I understood it also, the film has been Fuji for quite some time. I also was not impressed with the house brand 400, so I never even tried the 800. But I'm very pleased with the 200.

The way I figure, I'll only take a risk on house brand film if it's actually on sale for a good price (less than $2/roll).

Thanks for the tip (I know this is an old thread). I recently picked up a 4 pack of 24 exposures (200 speed) for $5.99 at the Walgreens near me. "March special" I think. I have to say though, my experience with Walgreens has been a mix of some bad and good. At times they do a fine job, but other times (like a few days ago) they just threw the negatives into the Walgreens packaging...not in a film canister or in sleeves. Kinda pissed me off.

Marke...since we're both from Wisconsin...which Walgreens does this great service for you? I need to start going there 🙂

I use costco. They only charge for the prints. So I did not have to pay anything for a blank roll they processed. I'll keep going back. These are scans of photos processed by costco and the brank is walgreens 200. I'm basically new to the game and I collect more than shoot...but these were taken with my Kodak Motormatic 35R4.

Did you get to talk to them when you dropped it off? That seems to be the key. Let's face it, these jobs don't tend to attract the brightest kids out there, and their work day is monotonous. But if you build up the slightest bit of personal connection it can make all the difference. The old "Still doing a lot of film?" line always seems to work for me if it's a new face. Or "This one has a longer leader, it's from an old Leica." Stuff like that.

In my experience, if I ask for the negs uncut, coiled loose in a plastic bag, they'll do it. Problem is if you're coming back hours later or the next day, the next shift may have crushed that bag under something else. So now I ask them to roll the strip up tight and put it back into the outer canister. Needs a couple of days under books at home to flatten, though.

Yeah, I talked to them. It just seems that at times they don't really think about what they're doing and what consequences it has (that roll they gave back to me rolled up in the cardboard container was full of dust, fingerprints and a few scratches). When I explained that, they understood.

I actually prefer to get them cut and sleeved...that way I don't have to keep them under books for a while. They do end up with some more fingerprints and the like though. I really need to find the best way to clean these negatives before I scan them, but that's another thread entirely... 🙂
