wanna talk rangefinders?

Have you ever tried the Canon P? 😉
This made me laugh! Thank you.

joe,
the Canon 7 has always had some appeal for me but after I tried the P--a camera I very much wanted to love but the combination of its viewfinder and my vision and glasses just didn't work for me 🙁--I had decided not to buy one until I could actually handle it in person first. Which effectively meant not buying one.

Once you have yours, I will be very interested to read your impressions of it especially compared to the P!

Rob

Wow Joe you you are heading back. I have a chrome Canon 135 in ltm but it's too long for the short base length of the Bessa R. I'd like to try a Canon 85/2. The Bessa has frame lines for 75mm & if I could afford the CV 75/2.5 I'd jump on it. I believe I recall you having at one time the CV 75 & was a wonderful portrait lens.

i think i have had 3 of the cv 75s…i should feel more embarrassed admitting that than i do! lol...

I remember the photo of your 3 Canon Ps from my early days on RFF.

I'm sure I've become tiresome as a cheerleader for Canon rf lenses, particularly the 50/1.8, but they really are excellent and undervalued.
I've currently got 5 lenses, plus a IVSB2 and an L1. Great stuff. You can even shoot the lenses on "other" rf bodies!🙂

i've wanted to try an L1 ever since i read about them…hasn't happened though.
i thought about the 50/1.8 and sort of had my eye open for a cheap one to appear but the 1.5 is a sonnar and such a compact, dense lens…and who could pass up a well priced sonnar?

I have been interested in a P for a long time. As a LTM and M user, I suppose the Canons would make sense. Every time I go to pull the trigger, I find myself longingly looking at Nikon. How were the two perceived by users from the period (and today)? Say a P vs. an S3?

i think the nikon rangefinders are still the best looking cameras ever made!

The P is Canon's version of the Nikon S3, and both have a similar assortment of framelines in the viewfinder. The Canon 7 has selectable framelines, more like the Nikon SP.

Having both the Nikon S3 and the Canon P, I find the Nikon to be a smoother user. The shutter winds more easily, and operates more quietly. I also like how the Nikon can be operated with only the right hand. The Canon P has a film door instead of the removable back like the Nikon, and the Canon P is far less expensive.

or maybe just listen? that's ok too!

film rf cameras are a funny thing, old, metal, heavy…well built…most of them.

i am waiting for a cla'd canon 7 to arrive from japan (with a working meter)…a cla'd canon 35/2.8 lens and now a recently cleaned canon 50/1.5 sonnar…

back to the future…

next on the list is a big old canon chrome 85/2 lens…and my canon kit will be complete!!
maybe a canon 28 as well…maybe...

... you didn't consider cleaning the lenses yourself then? 😉

team 50/1.8 REPRESENT. lol.

i have a ton of canon glass. 28/2.8 (x2, since the first one self destructed on me), 35/2.0, 50/1.4, 50/1.8 (x2, really), 100/3.5. i like them all and they're cheap enough that i use them with aplomb, which is how lenses really should be used. nb - the 85/2 spot is filled by a nikkor PC.

i will also say that the 75/2.5 cv mentioned above is always the most surprisingly good lens that i have. it's not the "best", but it's probably the one where i get the best ratio of "wow, that turned out well" shots to "uch" shots.

I've had a Canon 7 and its good value for the money, but it just didn't feel as refined as a Leica M. The meter in mine was not functional.

I've also had a Canon 85f2, bought and then sold on RFF. Heavy lens, long focus throw.

I do have several canon lenses: 28f2.8, 28f3.5, 35f2, and 50f1.8, all very good.

What gear you have is only significant in the sense that it works for you. Doesn't matter if it doesn't/didn't work for anyone else.

I had a good working Canon 7 and I liked it. I even bought the incredibly expensive rare flash coupling shoe for it. Then I could put accessory finders on it.

It reminded me alot of my Leica M5, in terms of size and the way it functioned.

Canon fan for sure + 1 leica/Contacts G1

I was thinking the same thing about the 7 and m5 .I like the size and feel of the
7 would like to try the m5 some day.The + is my Canon glass will work on both m and 7 without the cost of Leica glass.

Well, as the happy owner of both of those 50s, I can hardly blame you for jumping on a well-priced 50/1.5. In fact, I put my Canon sonnar on the L1 and took it for a spin last month. Just developed and scanned the negs, and up popped this one of the guy you bought the 35/2.8 from that I sold to him:

joe, your wish is my command. 🙂 I hated to part with this little gem, but I really didn't need three Canon 35s (I've still got the 35/1.8 and the 35/2.0). The little 35/2.8 does nice things with color, btw, producing slightly desaturated colors. Nice little lens. Here are a few of my favorites while I owned it:

Maybe in color 35/2 better than 35/2.8 , but i think in b&w better both
