I have to do an Atlanta run some time in the near future, passing the general vicinity. Not big on the climb part, but I would like to see it.

My wife and I went to Atlanta recently to see the Gordon Parks show at the High Museum. We stayed over night at Stone Mtn. We've been there a couple of times and it's very cool. It's certainly worth seeing.
While in the Atlanta area check out any photo exhibits at the High Museum and Jackson Fine Art. Both have some excellent shows.
Watch out in Stone Mountain, it's full of speed traps. The police are ready and willing to ticket you for speeding. I think the entire town is 30 or 35 mph and the speeds are strictly enforced.

Not really, I just had read about a group circulating a petition to sandblast the image off of Stone Mountain, so I added that comment on the end. Sounded like sore winners to me.
And I have wanted to see Stone Mountain and Mount Rushmore for years. But I'm only close to one of them, and I plan to go over there when it cools down a bit. This 100 degree stuff is making me wilt...

This makes sense, Al. I have been there many times. During winter months, they now have snow for people to enjoy.

Hmm. People enjoy snow? Maybe skiers, but I lived 50 years near Philly. If I never see a snowflake again, I won't miss it.
So, looking like September/October for Stone Mountain this year.

3rd weekend features the Scottish highland games with people in costumes, marching bands, dancers, athletes, vendors, and plenty of photo ops. It is also usually the first really cold weekend in the morning so don't be fooled by the 75 degree days 3 days before.
The leaves should be turning by then so they make nice colors on the lakes.
For B&W shooters there is the covered bridge and some interesting twisted trees on the walk up if you get off the path some near the top (just don't go over any edges). Small rock formations are on the back and sides of the mountain on the hiking trails.
Nearby is also Arabia mountain which has other interesting features but is much flatter.
