Hi guys.

Recently I bought a Zorki 4 with Jupiter 8. When it arrived I was really shocked  - so bad it was. OK, so let's get to work: Zokri is pure mechanics - it can be CLAed (even though it lacks the flash sync block  ) but the Jupiter has scratched front element (as if someone used sandpaper to clean it) and 5 aperture blades are missing! There are only 4 in there... seems someone thought it was only worth for parts, took the blades and sold the camera. And I, fooled with GAS, bought it. :bang:

At least I have some "project" to do :D

If anyone here has a Jupiter 8 and:

a) is willing to part with it and donate it for parts for my Jupiter 8
b) needs spare parts other than front element (all other lenses are clean - no fungus, no scratches and it is the type with "Industar-like" focusing)

then please contact me.

hello

It will be more practical to get a clean and functioning Jupiter-8 instead. The J-8 isn't very expensive. If you do get the necessary parts, putting them together may not be too difficult to do, but to make this 'composite' lens work right will really be hard.
You'll have to do a lot of calibration: the you'll have to make sure that the 'new' front element will work with the other elements in the optics. Then there's the mechanical issues as well.

Save the bad J-8 for other uses: it can be used as a loupe for examining contact sheets. Or you could shoot through it for effects :D

Spyderman,
if don't go wrong there's one j8 in the classified section but don't if it has been already sold.
Bye

Do you think it is possible to polish the front element to remove the scratches? Or is it still better to have scratches than to polish it? I know it might change the optical system, but I could try - what have I got to lose?

And the aperture blades can be swapped quite easily (if I had them :D )

How about making new aperture blades?

Since nothing can make this lens worse, I could try to make new aperture blades for it...

They are shaped like a part of a disk with two tiny bits sticking out at the ends. That might be a problem, but the blade itself could be cut from a thin spacer of the same dimensions...

When I get any results, I'll keep you informed.
