Wanted RFF Member To Fix Two Selenium Meters

I had QLM fix two meters (one was a Gossen Pilot) I don't even think I left a note with them other than a contact name and number...George got back to me in a few days letting me know they were done...very easy to work with, fast turn-around and very happy customer in the end...
On the Plus-Side he can do any calibrating needed to ensure a trustworthy piece of gear...

Well, you are sort of inviting me to ship him the meters with an attached letter. Perhaps.

Cheers,
Ruben

Are these meters really that impossible to fix?

There are a few potential problems. First you'd have to hook up a potentiometer to it along with a solar cell and vary the resistance while taking readings with a functioning meter, in order to find the correct voltage. Next, you have to find a solar cell (or selenium cell) that supplies that voltage. If you can't, you have to get one that supplies more than the correct voltage and figure on soldering in a resistor in series with it to get the correct voltage. Then you have to find or make room in the meter for everything to fit. Not just any cell of the correct voltage (or cell plus resistor) is going to fit in there. After that though, it's just basic soldering skills.

Silicon Photoelectric cells have 1/2 of their sensitivity in the Infrared, out to 11,000 ansgtroms. You need to put an IR cut filter in front of it for a meter. Unless of course you want to phtograph Infrared. Selenium meters are not very sensitive to the IR, nor are Gallium Arsenide cells.

If I had a meter that I really enjoyed using but needed some TLC I'd put it in a box addressed to QLM with a note that read...
Dear George:
I love this meter.
Please repair, calibrate, and make it pretty.
Let me know the cost.
Love and kisses.

And it would be done completely, quickly, and reasonably. That's how good George is.

I am thinking doing exactly the same.

Thanks,
Ruben
