Someone is currently offering an Epson R-D1 for $349 opening, but they offer to sell it for $800 via Western Union if you email them. This smells real fishy, and I believe it's a fraud. Caution! Auction is number 180075474496

I saw an XPan last week that was going the same way, eBay later cancelled the auction, so it seems it was indeed bogus. Never wire money to pay for items purchased on eBay, and always complete all purchases via eBay, not email!

Rangefinder buyers beware, the scammers are out to get us.

No matter how many times we warn people about these scams they fall for them anyway.

I reported several of these scam ebay auctions this morning but out of all of the others someone is going to get ripped off..

It is obviously a scam! I know because he is using the ad from another ebayer from whom I bought my rd1 and coincidently, the serial # listed for the camera he is selling is the serial # of MY camera!

If you can't instantly perceive which listings are fraudulent or not, or if you have the thought that something like this "might not be fraud, I'll play it by ear", you should not be buying any expensive items on eBay.

It's not for you.

I thought I could but may have just been ripped off on a Leica M5. At least I bought it through eBay and using Paypal. Will let you know as things unfold. Grrrrr. :bang::bang:

Post the number of the auction and I'll tell you if it was legit or not.

this is ALWAYS a fraudulent listing - 100% of the time - when people ask to receive payment outside ebay (in the ad). I mean, since they are openly asking to break the Ebay listing rules, how can it be legitimate?

Good thing is, the frauds are so blatant that it is nearly impossible to have the wool pulled over your eyes unless you're truly a fool.

this looks like a totally legit listing to me.

What alarmed me is that the seller's listings started disappearing from eBay, until none were left, including another camera I had a bid on. Seemed very odd. But he just contacted me to say the M5 had shipped, and he included a tracking number, which seems to be legit. Maybe I just started getting paranoid.

This is an excellent seller, no reason for any suspicion about this auction at all.

He has no negative feedbacks for non-delivery. One of his negative feedbacks was a mistake, the others were for minor quality disputes. His overall feedback is excellent+.

There is no evidence of account hijacking or anything unusual about his listings.

Don't worry about it.

My recent experience was scary, but turned out ok. You just can't be too careful.-

"...After 5 yrs. of using the site very carefully, have now (probably) had ID Hijacked ! Can't log in, and the Password/Secret question/address are all rejected. "Live chat" couldn't help and have now reported to their Trust and security setup. Will have to wait and see what they do.
Am furious - in part with myself. Can't imagine how this happened. Can never be careful enough. Hope there will not be other consequences of this. Anyone know what else I can/should do ?..."

"...Turns out someone had been trying to break into the account, and eBay had "suspended" the account. Part of it was my fault ( ) as I have travelled a lot the last few yrs, and moved between the US and New Zealand, and could not correctly give my (now outdated) addresses/phone nos. etc. to the eBay people.

Per the advice by ShadowFox, I "pestered" ebay again, and this next "Live Chat" finally got me correctly identified, and so they are sending me a temporary password soon.
My reason for posting this is that it seems to indicate that ebay does appear to hav reasonable protection system- (or is this just my relief and gratitude talking ?)
They also have a great Fraud protection Tutorial on their site, and advised me to use the excellent tools on my browser (Firefox) toolbar..."
