It's an interesting reminder of how times have changed. Who, in today's era of identity theft, would be so crazy as to have his Social Security number engraved on a camera?!?

Well, probably nobody today, but...years ago in Dallas, the police used to loan those little vibrating engravers so you could mark your SS# and/or drivers license number on everything you owned. You even got a break on your insurance rate if you did it. I still have a reel to reel tape deck I can't sell because it has so much personal info on it. A nice one (TEAC), but it weighs as much as a young calf. Maybe I'll start using it again. I probably still have a Hugo Montenegro tape or two...

I recently got hold of a Reel to Reel Revox A77 and I am now enjoying music in a way that is difficult to describe -
Dig out your old tapes and your TEAC Jon! - re-record your Miles and Monk at Newport (record or cd) onto one of those 10# reels, lower the light - pure your self a nice glass of McAllens and let you self flow with the music as you at a distance - and in a somewhat blurred vision - watch the big reels move majestical to the rythm of the illuminated VU-meters while you endulge yourself in a retro Hi-Fi nostalgica trip only surpassed by either handeling one of the 1950ties great rangefinders or by the company of a beautiful woman** of the same vintage.

In short keep the TEAC 🙂

It makes an otherwise excellent camera affordable though, and often a great buy (not this one). 🙂

On my M3, the previous owner went one step further and scratched the ss# off the body and lens before selling it! Talk about hamfisted.

I was thankful to the owner that sodomized my leica IIIa by engraving his id info. It defaced the camera to the point that I could afford one. I wanted to take pictures with it, not impress collectors or mythlickers with my camera. I was fortunate that the depth of engraving didn't go clear throught the body thus creating light leaks.
