Watches

For a good mechanical watch at that price range, I would put in another vote for Seiko. I bought this dive watch around 20 years ago, when I was into scuba diving in college, and it still looks and works great. 21 jewels, self-winding, i have gone through 3 or 4 straps, but the watch itself is as good as new. Now if Seiko only made the R-D1 that reliable... ;)

I still have a Seiko mechanical self wind wristwatch with alarm and calendar. It has a 23 jewell movement. The case is silver stainless steel. I had never seen a mechanical alarm before - it produces a vibrating buzzing sensation on the wrist. I think I got it for $15 from a fellow airman (USAF) in 1967. It still has his initials on the band clasp. It needs to be cleaned and adjusted.

I have a vintage 1969 Seiko. It's an automatic cronograph, and I've had it for a few years. I love it, and it never leaves my wrist. It cost me about $100 on ebay. I attached a picture. Personally I am a fan of vintage mechanical watches (I also own the original Doxa 300t Orange Face), and I like the blue and red bezel, the so called "pepsi" version.

I'm wearing a Seiko "Black Monster" SKX779K1. At $150 from Amazon.com, it's a lot of watch for the money. The bracelet is made from solid links instead of the usual folded ones. The case is heavy duty. The movement is proven. In a brand new mechanical watch, it's tough to do better for the money.

Just picked up this watch with bronze casing. Supposed to show a beautiful patina over time. We are going to get old together.

HI,

You can pay what you like for a mechanical watch. Some think they are a waste of money and time and price them accordingly. So Omega, Longines, Sekonda all turn up and get snatched up in the charity shops and get bought for a couple of coins from time to time.

When they need repairs or servicing you'll find that costs as much as the top of the range watches, especially if someone - I won't mention any names - put your watch through the washing machine with the laundry...

Regards, David

Look around at Elgin watches. I have a small collection of them, one was a gift, a pocketwatch from the 1920s, the others were all junk shop finds. I wore an Elgin self winding for a few years and got stuck in a rainstorm on my way home which caused it to seize. I have a Lord Elgin windup steel case watch that is fantastic. It just will not die and I bought it for about $10 without a band. I'm biased towards Elgin but another watch I'd love would be a military issue Bulova.

I always wondered why people still wear watches. Or why there are still shops around where you can buy them. I never see customers there btw.

Since everyone has a mobile phone with a watch on screen...

I put my watch aside long time ago.
And I only needed it to get on time to catch my train to work. And every evening when I came back home, I put it off and put it away. Being home, I don't like to watch a watch, it should be timeless, no-rush, no stress. Holiday.

My mechanical/automatic is a Hamilton (Khaki series, Field Mechanical). It has a Swiss automatic movement and it cost just under $300. While it's definitely not up there with the likes of Oris and Rolex, it is a good timepiece and attractive in a simple way. BTW, the power reserve of this watch is only about 24-48 hours. In other words, if I leave it on the bed stand rather than wear it, it'll stop after a day or two.

Where did you find a Hamilton Khaki for $300? MIne was over a $1000 quite a few years ago. Also a good Swiss automatic needs to be serviced every now and then Just like a Leica mechanical camera. About the same cost also. Both my Omega and Hamilton cost around $500 for a CLA.

I've got a Swatch IRONY Automatic watch (automatic as in automatic winding) that I've had for near a year, the face is sure scratched up but it hasn't stopped beating yet :D. It didn't cost more than $160 new and (due to not having an opaque face) is great fun to look at.

I have that one. They make stuff called Polywatch ($8 on AMZN) that will buff that crystal up as good as new.
