In the last step the squeegee is not always a good idea. Especially not on soft type emulsions.
IMO: Never touch a wet emulsion. Use in the last step destilled water with a little bit wetting agent (Ilfotol, photo flo, Rollei Super Wetting Agent whatever).

I am glad that my experiment reflects Robert's advice.
In my case just by substituting distilled water (in place of tap water) in the washing phase (no wetting agents used) is sufficient to get rid of those pesky watermarks.
