I got curious regarding when my newly aquired M3 was last serviced. Googled a bit and found out about the wax seal - and sure enough mine has one to. But I can not seem to find out who´s logo it is - definately some kind of "mark" there, but don't think it is a "D" for DAG or "93" ect. I tried taken a pic of it( not easy) - but may be some of the more knowledgeable Leica owners on the forum may know it ?

Sorry about the pic - couldn´t get any closer than this with my digi cam.

TIA.

Cheers,

I know of L, J, K, R, and 92. The mark isn't very clear in the photo you posted.

Thank you Bob - I'll see if I can make it out to be any of the ones you mentioned ( I think the closest would be a "J"), I´m sorry about the photo - but thats about as "macro" I can get with this little "auto" everything digi cam.

Thanks again.

Meakin, if you really need a larger magnification, you could always try a simple magnifying glass held in front of the photographed object or in front of the lens - you'd be surprised by the additional magnification you can achieve. There will probably be some distortion and color fringing, but in this case that's unimportant... Give it a try... Maybe someone will be able to ID the seal then.
I'm not familiar with those seals, and would also like to see this mystery solved :)

A "J" would be Jerry Kindermann at Kindermann Canada. I did a bit more research, and another possible mark is a "C" for the Midland factory in Ontario. You can also distinguish between two different "L" marks. An inset "L" indicates a Leica factory repair prior to 1981 (they stopped doing it then), and a raised L indicates the original Weztlar factory seal. I've also heard Reinhard Mueller used an "M," but I don't know if that's true.

Hmmmm looking closer - don't think it´s a "J"...to many bends and turns.

Denishr: thanks, I'll give it a go - just need to get a new magnifying glass, mine vanished - with some young children a long time ago....something to do with the sun and a load of ants..;)

My 1961 M2 (bought in 2002) seems to have an 'A' seal (top rather rounded), which seems to indicate "Kamera Service Centre" (Alois Kosnar) in Stockholm. My 1968 M4 (bought in 2004) has a raised 'L' which apparantly is factory seal. Does this mean that the M4 has never been CLAd? Both shutters show seam, but work quite OK. The M2 is smoother and looks a bit more battered while the M4 looks rather unused.

i have an impression of the raised L in fimo clay. anyone want to increase the value of their leica? hahahaaaa

I make the shot a little easier to see, but it does not clear up the mystery. It looks like it may have started life as a "D", but can not tell for sure.

I tried clearing it up in Photoshop, too, but it's not possible to get it to a readable state. I'm not sure if that's because the image is poor (it is fairly blurry), or because the mark itself wasn't made properly.
