Way OT: Danica Patrick is in leading Indy

Sorry, got caught up in the excitement of the last few laps. Feel free to delete this...

hmmmm Danica Patrick, beautiful name I must say but who the blazers is she .... And Indy, is this the music ot the car thingie ?

Must think about the European contributors to this forum you know :)

Fourth place is not too shabby for a rookie -- she handled a couple of bad moments extremely well. Congratulations to her for a very fine showing!

:) Indy 500 is one of the largest racing events in the world. The drivers come from all over (often after doing well in F1). So... Indy said as Indy... should ALWAYS be taken to refer to the Indianapolis 500.

And as to who is Danica? Cute 5'1" brunette rookie:)

Made some rookie errors... and stillended 4th. Good grief she is gonna be good. Biggest worry I had is she would win. I would have expected it to kill here career (where to strive for?).

Hated the ABC coverage. Couldn't find out where one of my friends landed (one was out:() Oh well. Reminds me of the movie Greedy, and the discussions on what people want to see vs what some director shows.

I would really like to shoot Indy one year.

Ah, but a Brit just won, and for the first time. Fine showing.

First woman to ever lead the field at Indy, Danica's star has just started to rise.

Indy is as big as Superbowl ?

A lot bigger actually. Autoracing in general is much larger (even in the USA) than football.

Think on this. The grandstands were pretty empty this year. Only 400,000 in them. Millions in the USA also watch on TV. Millions more outside of the USA.

Now this is a race:)

Danica finished unbelievably well, in 4th, and this is totally admirable. Her rookie mistakes are just as well, since a flawless race to a win might just turn her into an arrogant little brat. :) This gives her some humility, yet finishing that high is something to be very proud of. She's going to be great.

She led the race three times... first just for one lap because she chose not to pit with most of the rest and stayed out just that one lap before pitting herself. So that was merely a strategic matter with a bit of luck. But the next time she stayed out she managed to hold onto the lead for some 15 laps; excellent performance! The third time she actually fought her way to the lead against determined opposition; totally admirable.

While most of the Indycar races are on oval tracks, some are on urban street courses or road tracks, which I do think makes it more interesting. The oval is a different kind of game, I think.

But they just drive in circles yes ?

Yes, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is an oval. As Doug said, it presents a different challange, as speeds typically go higher. The F1 will be racing there in mid-June.

Actually, another Brit, Graham Hill, won Indy in 1966, I believe. Also Jimmy Clark (actually a Scot won it at least once. I think Jackie Stewart, also a Scot, won. They were all Formula One champs. Jack Brabham, a Brit, introduced the modern rear-engine design at Indy.

It's good to see a woman competitive. The early women who entered might have been more competitive if they had had quality cars like Danica's

Umm no. The last woman to enter ran twice. Caused a major wreak twice. ON the same darn lap. Quality driver will make up a large difference. More than most would believe. Figure 90% drive, 8% car and 2% luck. At least by my calc.

By the way, they annouced this was the first "Englishman" to win the race.

Racing is a lifestyle... move away from it and it draws you back:)

I recall two women who have raced this kind of car ... One I haven't seen for a few years, Lynn St. James. Recently, and still currently I believe, is Sarah Fisher. I think each of these has raced at Indianapolis, though not at the same races. It gets a little confusing too because the racers split into two separate racing leagues; Indycar, and IRL (Indy Racing League). Though perhaps not a brilliant driver, Sarah has done reasonably well, winning at least one race I think. Danica Patrick may turn out to be better.

Actually, Jack Brabham is an Australian, NOT a Brit. And it should actually be Sir Jack Brabham. He was (and still is) one of the greatest drivers and engineers of the open wheel motor racing fraternity. He still manages to get out and do some laps during vintage car days at race trtacks all around the world.

Actually CART and IRL. Sarah was a disater at indy. Check out her record on that track. She needed way more seasoning in all truth (maybe some Silver Crown time?). Wow. Lynn St. James raced Indy? Nice person from what I hear to. Weird history.
