"We alll walk ze wibberly wobberly walk"... a quote from the Taskerson's flashback in Malcolm Lowry's UNDER THE VOLCANO, the marching song of the famously and fictionally inebriated Taskerson boys as they trotted their gals off to Hell Bunker on their local links. Remembered by procouncil Geoffrey Firmin on the Day of the Dead in Cuernavaca Mexico, November 1, 1938.

Anyway, this is what is was thinking about as I shot this group of revelers making their way through the French Quarter last Saturday in New Orleans, an apt foil for Cuernavaca I suppose.

These folks weren't quite yet sh*tfaced, but they were certainly doing their own wibberly wobberly walk.

In any case, enough incoherent rambling for a completely sobber me.

Streetcar Shelter on Canal Street in New Orleans.

The fellow on the bench was sucking down the last drops of his beer before taking off on a stroll. When he stood up from the bench, he left behind a puddle. Guess he went to search out his next beverage. The gal sharing the bench with him didn't seem to mind, but given that she was bundled up in heavy clothing on a hot day, I'm not sure she was any alert that day than he was.

They'll be lying in that gutter in a few hours.

Another interesting fact about new orleans, a city which I happen to love:
in the french quarter, the tourists tend to behave badly and over-indulge to a degree that the local constabulary will handcuff the the worst offenders, the unconscious ones, to street posts (really, horse-hitching posts) to sleep it off. because some of those folks tend to lose concern for handling private bodily functions in more private surroundings, the city doesn't bother to release them in the morning until after the street cleaning trucks have hosed them down with a special lemon-scented cleaner specifically engineered to remove the noxious aroma left behind by people emptying their innards from all available orifices directly onto the streets and sidewalks. I am in bed and asleep before all this cleansing and primping happens, so I am relying on third-party sources for my information (including an interview with a city sanitation contractor). watch where you step. lots of lunch left on the sidewalk in NOLA.
